HONOLULU — After 90 minutes, both the No. 12 UH-Hilo Women’s Soccer team and Northwest Nazarene played to a draw Tuesday morning at Saint Louis School Field on the campus of Chaminade University.
The Vulcans more than doubled the Nighthawks’ shot total at a 20-9 margin, yet none were able to find the back of the net.
UH-Hilo had perhaps its closest opportunity early in the 11th minute when Nanea Wall took advantage of a slow roll out from the Nighthawks’ goalkeeper and applied the pressure through two defenders to launch from the top of the penalty box but was met with the solid right post.
UH-Hilo’s Phoebe Barnes was credited with three saves while NNU’s Bailey Blancett had four.
Near the 60-minute mark, Northwest Nazarene’s Alejandra Jaramillo took a shot from about the same spot as Wall, but Barnes punched it out from its high-center trajectory.
NNU’s Savanna Herz later took a last-minute shot aimed to go in from 35 yards out, but Barnes again stood strong to make the save.
UH-Hilo moved to a 1-0-1 record while Northwest Nazarene moved to 1-0-2.
The Nighthawks were voted to finish as the No. 3 team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
UH-Hilo will return home for a matchup with Stanislaus State (0-1-1) Sept. 15 at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
It will be Student Appreciation Day as attending UH Hilo students can receive a pizza slice and Pepsi drink.
The Vulcans will then make a trip back to Oahu for a non-conference tilt against HPU on Sept. 19 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
